This is a reply to the Lemure, "Thanks DiC: a Sailormoon
story". Normally I would not reply to peoples' Lemures,
since I have not done so in the past (even though I've
REALLY wanted to). But this article simply pisses off the
purist in me.
I don't mean to attack Sailormusic, or his/her opinions.
However, in my opinion, that entire "story" is, to put it
lightly, a load of crap. Assuming things is not something I
enjoy doing, but I can't help but make the assumption that
Sailormusic has not seen the original version of BSSM. If
this is not true, then I apologize, but his/her opinions in
the article defintely say otherwise. There is nothing wrong
with supporting DiC (some fans might enjoy the dub; nothing
wrong with that, it's just not my favorite version), but
the article seems to suggest that DiC is responsible for
Sailormoon's success. Which, in my opinion, is the farthest
from the truth you can get.
If DiC had never dubbed Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon (we can
dream, can't we? ^_^), that certainly does not mean
everything Sailormoon-related would disappear forever.
There would still be a manga, an anime, and merchandise.
The only difference would be that Sailormoon would only be
popular in Japan, other countries where DiC was not
affiliated, and on the internet. That does not mean there
would be no Sailormoon websites in English. Hitoshi Doi's
page and the other good English BSSM pages would still have
been made. Hitoshi Doi (author of "the Sailormoon bible")
made a wonderful page in English, even though he is a
Japanese man and has probably never watched the DiC dub
(lucky him!). The only significant change would be 90% of
the crap pages in the Sailormoon web community would be
gone (You can't deny that most of the crap pages are about
the dub mixed with the original). If DiC had never dubbed
Sailormoon, it doesn't mean there would not still be lots
of Japanese merchandise. I would still have my Japanese
Sailormoon wall-scrolls and Takeuchi Naoko's artbooks. If
DiC had never dubbed BSSM, the only significant change
would be all the cheap Irwin junk would never have been
made (would we really miss the "Moon Cycle"? I think not).
Despite what some dub fans want everyone to believe, DiC
did not bring Sailormoon to the United States because they
wanted to do a favor for anime fans. They just wanted to
make a profit, and they still are, even with the terrible
job they did. Which is why I don't understand why people
continue to "thank" them. It's beyond my comprehension. To
thank them for mutilating a wonderful anime series... if I
had the choice, I would choose not to see Sailormoon at
all, rather than to have DiC dub the series the way they
did.
Where was I?... ^^; I guess the point I'm trying to make
(if anyone is still reading by now) is that DiC did not
create Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon. If we should thank
anyone, it's TAKEUCHI NAOKO. So, let me be the first to
say, "Thanks, Naoko."
