I've been away from the so-called 'Sailormoon Online
Community' for quite a
while now and just recently found my way back. A lot of
things happened
while I was away that I feel I have to make some comments
on.
The first thing that I noticed after coming back was a big
debate over
people closing down their sites. This struck home as I
abandoned my site
(Reflections) earlier this year - left it up but untouched.
There are a lot
of reasons that happened - not a single one of them was a
loss of interest in
the manga or any pettiness within the SMC. I've been
around on this planet
long enough to have figured out that people are people no
matter where they
are. Firstly, I hated it. I got to the point where all
the ideas I had for
it weren't working. My page was staring me in the face
telling me to
please, please just let it die. Or at least go into a coma
for a while. I
had html block, a lack of vision... and a life. School,
work, greencards,
not to mention getting married, all were much higher
priorities to me than
my site. So I left it to wither and burn. To say that the
closing of sites
was a 'trendy' thing to do is... insane for lack of a
better word.
Personally, I strongly believe that each and every person
who closed their
site or chooses not to update is doing everyone a favor-
most of all
themselves. Once you start to hate your site, it goes
downhill pretty fast.
Better to kill it and put it out of its misery.
Sort of following along the same lines, I can't help but
notice a lot of
complaining going on about 'trends'. Isn't that what life
is really all
about? In a nutshell, humans are pretty much prewired to
follow trends.
The infamous 'they' say what's cool, and everyone blindly
follows. Trends
and trendy things bother the hell out of me- I can't stand
seeing people
wearing ugly clothes just because everyone else is wearing
them. It makes
me wonder what would happen if I walked up to someone and
told them their
clothes were ugly. But my thoughts wander. Trends online
can lead to
people who can't get away from the <H1> tag to making
something quite eye
pleasing. Tables were one of the best things to ever hit
the SMC as far as
I'm concerned. Still, it's time for new trendsetters to
step forward and
take things even further. Don't be afraid to try something
different with
your site. Even if it doesn't work, at least it was
something you came up
with yourself. Find out what went wrong and make it right.
I was gone a long time, but things really havn't changed
that much. There
are still good sites, and they are outnumbed by the bad
sites. My site was
a bad site when it first went up, so there's still hope. I
don't feel so
much hatred towards my site as I did when I left it to die
back in June.
I've even dragged out my scanner, and I'm ready for some
serious updating.
